Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are terms that are often confused. They are both ‘talking therapies’ and there are many similarities between the two. Counselling tends to focus on a difficult life situation or set of problems. It can involve providing suggestions and advice. Psychotherapy tends to be longer term and offers a deeper exploration of the self. They both aim to bring about change in the way people think about themselves, the way they experience others and the pattern of their relationships.

What should I expect at the initial consultation?

I like to allow an hour to an hour and a quarter for an initial consultation. I see this time as an opportunity to begin to get to know each other, for us to talk about your expectations and to think about how therapy might be helpful.

How often would we meet?

For therapy to be most effective it is best to meet weekly at the same agreed time and day each week. Each session will last for 50 minutes.

How long should I expect to continue?

There is no simple answer to this question. How long you continue depends on what it is you need and want from working with a therapist and we will discuss this carefully when we meet. Therapy can last anywhere from one session to several months or years. The initial consultation provides an opportunity to think about which option might best suit your needs.

  • Time-limited work usually focuses on a specific problem and how this can be managed.
  • Open-ended work is about developing personal insight and understanding with the view of changing the way we think about ourselves, the way we experience life and the relationships we have with others.

What about privacy and confidentiality?

Your need for privacy and confidentiality will be respected at all times.

When you arrive there is no need to give any personal details other than say you have an appointment to meet with me.

As part of my professional practice I am required to consult with a senior colleague to maintain standards which reflect the requirements of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Information is never disclosed to others unless it is required by a court of law or there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others when I would always seek to discuss such concerns with you in the first instance

What if I have thoughts about ending?

If at any time you find yourself thinking about ending the work it is important that we talk about this. Talking will ensure we can think things through together and work towards an agreed ending if that is what you would like to do.

  • The fee for an initial consultation is £50 for which I like to allow an hour to an hour and a quarter.
  • The fee for each subsequent 50 minute session is £50.

Fees can be settled by cash, cheque or bank transfer. The fee for an initial consultation can be paid at the time of the consultation. Fees for subsequent sessions are payable at the beginning of each month following receipt of my invoice for the previous month.

I charge a full fee for all missed sessions apart from the times when I am unable to meet with you. This arrangement is not primarily a financial consideration. It is generally accepted as being part of a sound therapeutic framework where the reliability and rhythm of weekly meetings allow the work to develop in the most helpful way. I am always available to meet with you, apart from my holiday breaks, at the time we agree and I will never have any other arrangements, even if you are unable to meet with me.
